All Things Foxy

As I mentioned back in this post I believe owls are on the way down and I was wondering what would replace them. My call for the new trending up animal is the fox! Fantastic Mr Fox! At any rate, I think foxes can be cute and have used them as the theme for my upcoming baby’s nursery. It doesn’t hurt that I love orange and foxes can be considered orange in my book! So, without further ado here is some foxy inspiration for you all, admittedly it is mostly nursery related but I have been ogling these pictures for a while and have fallen in love with them!

Food in Jars

So I was looking back through the posts I’d missed on Bakerella recently and this one jumped out at me! Pie in a jar! So practical and cute makes these on the way up. A great idea for a portable dessert, no worries about transporting them and risking your lovely handiwork that you have slaved over being ruined on the way to your dinner party.

I also love that the possibilities are practically endless with this concept. Pies in jars, desserts in jars, cupcakes in jars… let me know your ideas! Here are some faves I have discovered.

Some uses for these include dinner parties, picnics, and wedding or party favours. Add a spoon or fork and it’s a complete take away meal!

Trash the Dress

From my snoop around the web there do seem to be some mixed opinions about Trash the Dress photoshoots. These involve taking your wedding dress out of hiding and then having a photoshoot in all sorts of circumstances that probably would have been your worst nightmare on your actual wedding day! Some people choose to have shoots of them in their dress at the beach, getting all covered in sand and water and with these type of shoots you can generally take your dress to the drycleaners and it comes back good as new. The shoots I am a fan of are the ones that involve slightly more permanent trashing such as paint!

Many people just can’t see the sense in trashing what once was your most beloved and possibly most expensive item of clothing. I figure you’re never going to wear your dress again and if you haven’t sold it by now then you might as well trash it! So, for me, Trash the Dress shoots are definitely on the way up. What better way to wear your dress again and have some fun in it? If my dress still fits I would love to do this as a one year anniversary type thing. The traditional first year anniversary gift is paper I believe, so, photos are printed on paper, seems the perfect gift to me!

Here are some of the shoots I may be using as inspiration.

Nappy Cakes

Whilst pondering and searching for some unique or interesting baby gifts for the seven ladies I know right now who are pregnant I was reminded of the baby shower staple: the nappy cake. These have been around for a little while now (since my friends starting having babies at least 3 or 4 years ago, I had no need to know about them prior to this!). I admit you can make some kind of cute stuff out of face washers and socks and onesies but to purchase these in a store I find they are always extremely over-priced for what is essentially a gift of three pairs of socks and a beanie! The nappy cake is really taking this concept to the next level I think. They are tiers of nappies (diapers for our American friends) usually adorned with various other baby trinkets and a giant bow.

What I cannot understand now is how people still think this classifies as a ‘unique’ baby shower gift. These are not unique, they have been around for ever and therefore they are trending down. When you put a little more thought into the concept it’s really not that much of a practical gift anyway. Nappies taken out of their packet, touched by ‘x’ number of people who are assemling the ‘cake’ then ogled and touched by everyone at the baby shower who thinks it’s just ‘so charming and clever’. Realistically, are you going to want to put these nappies on your newborn? I’m sure I’ll be the same so not throwing stones here but most new mums meticulously wash every item of clothing and disinfect every household surface before bringing the new arrival home so why would they want to put ‘dirty nappies’ on their new bundle of joy? Baby showers are a great time for receiving practical gifts that you will actually use and that will save you a little bit of time and money (commodoties that are in short supply with an infant!) so please don’t waste your money on one of these monstrosities. Or, if you still like the idea of them, then have fun shopping with the links provided!

Stockings, like most things, started out for men! They were also quite drab and when women started wearing them, it was purely for warmth. Luckily these days stockings are made from a variety of materials, in a variety of colours and with numerous patterns. I personally love all sorts of stockings and tights and wear them for a combination of fashion and warmth. Given that stockings are both practical and aesthetically pleasing they are definitely trending up. Possibly the only downside is it does somewhat limit your choice of shoes!

Cake Smash

Most people love babies and most people love cake so it makes sense to combine these two in a cake smash photo shoot. Usually this is done around the time of the child’s first birthday and one major benefit that makes this trending up is that you then get some really nice photos of your child to commemorate this milestone.

You want a nice bright cake and an outfit that you don’t mind your child getting messy! Some choose just to wear a nappy, some go for the nice party dress, a cute one I recall was a nappy and tie. Get a few photos of the cake before the destruction and then let your little one go nuts helping themselves and getting as messy as possible! The type of cake and icing you choose can make a difference to how ‘messy’ the shoot ends up. Buttercream, for example, will probably create more mess than fondant.

I am creating a cake this week for a cake smash shoot that will be done by the lovely Carly from CJ Williams Photography of her gorgeous nephew. So I may have some more photo inspiration to add for this idea in a few weeks but for now here are what others have done.

Keep Calm

Keep Calm and THINK OF SOMETHING NEW TO DESIGN! This one may should go without saying! These have been in existence since the Second World War! The British Government started producing the original Keep Calm and Carry On posters in 1939 for some morale boosting PR. Interestingly enough the Keep Calm and Carry On poster was the third and final in the series and was never actually used as they were intended to be displayed when Germany invaded Britain. Most were then destroyed at the end of the war and only a relative handful remain. Sure, it would be great to purchase one of the original war time posters but the recent influx since 2000 of various Keep Calm and… seems to have taken the shine off.

Yes, there are many funny ones going around and I admit some certainly give me a chuckle. But please stop brandishing iPad covers, coffee mugs and the like with some inane nonsense trying to cling to the dying last few dollars you can make off getting these products mass produced in China and sold to those living 5 years in the past. A quick google shows that many are paired with yesterday’s pop culture icons and therefore prove my point all over again. Keep Calm and find the next trend to saturate the market with. These posters are going down but here is a reminder of what we will be leaving behind.

Miniature Food

Ok, things in miniature are just too cute and everyone loves food so this is definitely trending up.

Mini food

Clockwise from top left: 1. Mini hamburgers by me, 2. Mini hotdogs from Bridal Guide, 3. Desserts in shot glasses via Pinterest, 4. Mini coffee with mini doughnuts from Martha Stewart Weddings.

Miniature treats are great for parties. Having something that everyone can just eat on the go without getting their hands too messy is just plain practical. Now these are great for any party but I do love the emerging trend of serving these as ‘midnight snacks’ at a wedding. Just as the main meal is starting to digest from all the dancing and energy levels are waning – BAM – food to grab and it’s gone by the time you get back on the dance floor. If you’re thinking of starting a wedding related business in the near future consider specialising in midnight food. Trust me, this is the next lolly buffet.

Owls are everywhere! Owl jewellery, owl bookends, owl cushions, owl wall art, owl lamps, owl cups… well you get the idea! It is for this very reason that owls are going down. Owl overload, the market is saturated, it cannot take much more! I still believe birds in general may stay on trend but it’s time to mix it up, pick a new bird, or pick a variety of birds to try and slow down the demise of the next one. Sparrows have stood the test of time for a while now but seem to be reserved for those with an admiration for ink. How about crows for a change of pace perhaps? So long as nothing comes with audio I could get onboard with that.
